A destroyed camp gives you a lane to place high powered people and force a choice on your opponent - do they attack the people not guarding anything or the people guarding a valuable camp that's still standing? Most of the game is about trading tempo and forcing tough choices on one another. A winning player will often have spent quite a few assets on taking down a camp. Turns are usually very short, but a player can spend time on some really big turns throughout the game. A game usually takes from 15 to 40 minutes max. Every camp and every person has a special ability and a specific water cost, but they all have two health, so even the most powerful assets can be crushed with concerted effort. So, you're placing people to protect camps, much like using ice to protect servers in Netrunner. The game has three lanes on each side, ending in three camps. But it takes planning and finesse to make some strategies work. And then when you release them, it can be sheer chaos. A player can keep quite a few big hitters in their hand without your opponent knowing what is up your sleeve. While there are no hidden cards on the table, card/action advantage is huge for tempo, just as in Netrunner. It's not the asymmetry of Netrunner, but it is still a game about protecting your camps (like servers) while make runs on your opponent's with your raiders. Some are great at getting you more cards and churning the deck. Some camps can clear all people from the board, chuck people at your opponent, resurrect a fallen camp. No hardcoded asymmetry, but every game the players each pick three distinct camps that inform their strategies and define the board state.

It requires a lot of knowledge to play, both in the rules and the cardsets.Īre there game/s that you know of that could fulfil the feeling of Netrunner without the downsides that makes it difficult to get to the table without a dedicated group? I do realise that a lot of what makes it great *was* playing with a dedicated group that has all that meta knowledge, but it would be nice to be able to play a more boardgamey style game with all the similar plus sides. It's strictly 2-players, there are multiplayer variants but they're not all that hot. Spending hours outside of the game deciding whether to do 2 copies of a card or 3 copies, or to include this or that, is not the kind of fun I like to have The pacing of the game is GREAT, how even a player behind could pull off a win, but it's not just pure janky randomness.īut it has a few elements that makes it really difficult to play more of: The interplay between players' knowledge/information

Netrunner is probably my favourite game ever:
